Bank robbery suspect nabbed by NPD

Newnan Police officials helped Columbus authorities locate a suspected bank robber in Newnan Tuesday evening -- only hours after the crime occurred.
The Newnan Police Department was contacted by the Columbus Police Department regarding a bank robbery investigation. On Tuesday, between 2 and 3 p.m., a BB&T Bank branch in Columbus was robbed. A tag number of the suspect's vehicle was obtained, and the vehicle was registered to a Newnan address. Columbus authorities asked Newnan police for assistance in locating the vehicle and registered owner.
Detective Sgt. Rick Mires of the Newnan Police Department headed the local investigation. He was able to identify John E. Johnston, of West Washington Street, as the suspect.
Columbus detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Johnston, and Newnan police conducted surveillance of the West Washington Street address. At approximately 6:45 p.m., officers spotted an individual who fit the description of the suspected bank robber arrive at the residence. The person was driving a gray Honda Accord with plates that matched the suspect vehicle provided by Columbus police.
As Newnan officers were making preparations to execute the Columbus arrest warrant, the suspect left the residence in the Honda. Sgt. Mires and other officers made a traffic stop and arrested Johnston without incident.
Columbus detectives and agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation executed a search warrant at Johnston's residence Tuesday evening and found evidence linking the suspect to the Columbus bank robbery, according to authorities.
Johnston was taken into custody by Columbus police and transported to the Muscogee County Jail.
