Local energy assistance program for homebound will begin on Monday

By Winston Skinner

The Times-Herald

Community Action For Improvement, Inc. is administering the 2010 Energy Assistance Program for Coweta County.

Minnie Robinson will be coordinating the local application process from CAFI's service center on Savannah Street in Newnan. CAFI will also be working with the program in the counties of Carroll, Heard, Meriwether and Troup.

The Energy Assistance Program begins Monday. Robinson said the application period will be in the homebound phase until the end of November. This month, CAFI will accept applications from people who are medically homebound, disabled and households where all members are age 65 years or older.

Disabled people are defined as those drawing Social Security disability or Veterans Administration disability. Households headed by someone 65 or older may be eligible with minor children -- but no adults -- in them.

People not eligible during the homebound phase may apply starting Dec. 1.

The Energy Assistance Program will help pay heating costs for gas, electricity, wood, coal or kerosene. One-time payments will be made primarily by checks issued to the home energy supplier on behalf of eligible households.

Robinson said it is critical that people applying for assistance bring proof of gross income for all household members for the last 30 days. The proof can be paycheck stubs, public assistance checks or unemployment award letters. Applicants must also bring the original Social Security card for each person in the household and their most recent home heating bill.

All eligible households must be responsible for their home heating costs. Eligibility for the program is based on the gross income of all members of the household. To be eligible, households must have a gross annual income equal to or less than:

* $21,458 for a one-person household.

* $28,061 for a two-person household.

* $34,363 for a three-person household.

* $41,266 for a four-person household.

* $47,868 for a five-person household.

* $54,471 for a six-person household.

* $55,709 for a seven-person household.

* $56,947 for a household of eight.

Applicants in Coweta County should call the Newnan Service Center at 770-253-3864 for additional information. Applicants from other counties should call the CAFI service center in the county in which they live.

The program will be administered on a first come/first served basis.
