Homecoming events under way at Northgate, Heritage

By News Staff

The Times-Herald

Sometimes history does repeat itself.

Earlier this year, East Coweta High School and Newnan High School held Spirit Week and Homecoming during the same week. Now students at Northgate High and The Heritage School are keeping up with days and themes to know what to wear -- and looking forward to a Friday football matchup and crowning of Homecoming 2009 royalty.

The theme for Northgate Homecoming this year is "Blast from the Past." Spirit week activities began with Monday's '50s Day when students dressed in poodle skirts, saddle shoes, leather jackets and T-shirts.

Today, students will flash back to the '60s and '70s with everything from tie-dyed shirts to leisure suits as a part of their attire.

On Wednesday, Northgate students will don clothing and hairstyles from the 1980s. Wednesday afternoon the fun continues at the annual Powder Puff Football Game, where girls' teams from each class play football while the boys cheer them on from the sidelines. The Powderpuff Game will start at 4 p.m. in the stadium with admission being $4. The community is invited.

Thursday will be Homecoming Spirit Day at Northgate. Homecoming T-shirts will be the style that day.

This year's T-shirt design was inspired by senior SGA President Kaitlin Simonton. The T-shirts sport a "Blast from the Past" theme with highlight colors for each class.

Classes will compete for the Spirit Award at the homecoming pep rally during school on Thursday by showing their spirit, wearing class colors and participating in various games. Thursday's activities continue with the annual parade of class floats and homecoming court representatives, led by the Northgate JROTC and the Viking marching band. The parade will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Coweta County fire station on Fischer Road, loop through the softball parking lot and end in the Northgate parking lot.

Friday is a school holiday for students in the Coweta County School System. The Northgate varsity football game will begin at 7:30 p.m. The Vikings will face the Wildcats from Whitewater High School in Fayette County.

The homecoming court will be presented, and the 2009 homecoming queen will be crowned at halftime Following the game, Northgate students, parents and alumni are invited to attend the homecoming dance from 9-11 p.m. in the Johnny Brown Gymnasium. The men of the homecoming court will be presented at the dance, with the 2009 homecoming king being crowned at approximately 10:30 p.m.

Heritage students were on Fall Break on Monday, so the events there start today. Upper School Crazy Tie Day is being held today, and College T-shirt and Jeans Day will be held Wednesday.

Upper School Character Day will be held Thursday at Heritage. The Lower School Football Game will be at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Middle School Football Game at 7 p.m.

Heritage will also be having a Powder Puff Game and Bonfire for grades 9-12 immediately after the middle school game Thursday.

Friday will be School-Wide Red White and Blue Day. A pep rally is set for 2:20 p.m. for students in grades 7-12.

Heritage's 2009 Homecoming game will be at 7:30 p.m. Their opponents will be Colonial Hills Christian School from Lithia Springs. The homecoming court will be presented at halftime.

On Saturday, Heritage's Homecoming Dance -- for grades 9-12 will be held from 8-11 p.m. at the Student Life Center on the Heritage campus.
