Mr. Cecil Herman Chappell, age 83, of Newnan, died on October 23, 2009, at his residence.
Mr. Chappell was born in Fayette County to the late Roy and Janie Whatley Chappell on September 2, 1926. He worked for the parks department for Newnan Utilities for many years. Mr. Chappell loved his church and was a member of the East Newnan Baptist Church for over 53 years. He enjoyed watching baseball, especially his favorite team, the Atlanta Braves. Family was very important to Mr. Chappell, particularly the love he had for his grandchildren. In addition to these pastimes, he also had a love for bluegrass music.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Larry Johnston. Cecil Herman Chappell is survived by his wife, Manor Lou Crider Chappell of Newnan; sons, Steve Chappell and his wife Becky of Sharpsburg and Lyn Johnston and his wife Jane of Panama City Beach, Fla.; sister, Betty Smith of Senoia; grandchildren, Chris, Brooke, Natalie, Sandi, Jeremy, Jason, Joe, Matt and Melissa; great grandchildren, Everett, Logan, Sadie, Walker, Ben, Gabe, Gavin, Laura, Abby and Madison.
Services will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. at the East Newnan Baptist Church with Rev. Pat Latta and Rev. Frank Powers officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the East Newnan Baptist Church Building Fund, 577 East Gordon Road, Newnan. Higgins Hillcrest Chapel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
