Mr. John Powell "JP" Smith, age 64, died Friday, November 13, 2009, at his home in Newnan. Mr. Smith, a long-time Newnan resident, was a member of the Central Baptist Church. He was born in Newnan in 1945 to the late Marion Keith Smith and Clair Smith. In 1970, he was united in matrimony to the former Carol Fulwider. Mr. Smith attended Newnan High School then served in the United States Army where he earned a General Educational Development certificate. During his service in the Army, he was stationed in Vietnam and earned the Bronze Star for meritorious service while under fire. After retiring from a 28-year career with Delta Air Lines, Smith enthusiastically pursued his gunsmith hobby. He was a Master Marksman and a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.

In addition to his wife, Carol F. Smith, he is survived by his twin sister, Mary Smith Lee, of Loganville, GA; aunts, Jane Keith of Newnan and May Keith of West Point, GA; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. A graveside service will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery on Tuesday November 17, 2009, at 11 a.m. David Brown will officiate.
