Growing up in the era of religious taboos -- don't do this, don't do that -- I can remember that strong drink got the most critical castigation, even though it was obvious that few were practicing what they were preaching.

There is enormous interest in this year's election -- particularly in the presidential election where the Republican ticket of John McCain and Sarah Palin faces Democrats Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

There's a ramble going on in our community this weekend, with more than 150 "ramblers' getting a close look at some of the grand places in the Senoia, Newnan and Roscoe areas.

As the first weekend in October nears, let's contemplate outdoor burning. The outdoor burning ban for Coweta County and 53 other Georgia counties that goes into effect May 1 is lifted on Oct. 1. This will be the first weekend for outdoor burning in five months. Some of us may have plans to get outdoors, do some cleaning and burn debris.

When you have to wait in line for 20 minutes to buy gas, and then pay $4.50 per gallon for the privilege, you want someone to blame.

From time to time, we like to get on our editorial soapbox and sing the praises of downtown Newnan. Let's do so today.

I am glad I voted early and have no regrets. Sen. John McCain proved he is a great leader by his performance in the first debate. Sen. Barack Obama agreed with McCain seven times, saying McCain is right on numerous topics.

I'm old enough (65) to have lived through two cycles of corruption in our country. In the 1960s, while going to college, I worked at a union manufacturing plant and saw guys working four hours and getting paid for eight (or sometimes, even overtime).

Let's take a break from the political babble and take notice of something happening in the community and across the nation. The number of motorcycles on the road have increased. If you haven't noticed the number of motorcycles (include scooters too) on the road, you should.

PRESIDENT BRADY? Some leading Republicans have stated Sarah Palin's limited time as mayor of a very small town gave her the skills to be vice president. Does that mean the extended tenure as mayor of Newnan (much larger town) makes Keith Brady ready to be President?
DON'T BLAME BUSH: I thought I had heard it all until one day watching Fox News I heard a woman say it was Bush's fault these hurricanes were coming into the Gulf and destroying cities. FEMA was held back by the governor of Louisiana, not Bush.
GET FACTS STRAIGHT: The debate wasn't delayed. McCain met the need of his campaign and met his obligation as senator. He was earning his senatorial salary, not out chasing more money for another job. Which candidate is likely to run when hard times hit?
ANOTHER DEPRESSION: In U.S. history, trickle down economics was tried by three Republican presidents in the 1920s, and there was the Great Depression. I believe we are headed toward another.
REAL ISSUES: Why are we not being bombarded with gay marriage, abortion rights and affirmative action political ads this year? Did things change? Yes they did. For the first time in a long time the people running for office have to talk about real issues that pertain to all of us.
GREED, CORRUPTION: World wars couldn't do it. Terrorists couldn't do it. Not even consecutive years of natural disasters could bring this country to its knees. It appears the thing that may do it is greed and corruption of those who manage the financial resources entrusted to them by the people.
SHIRKING RESPONSIBILITIES? McCain did the right thing. His first responsibility was to the state he represents as a senator, then as a presidential candidate. He didn't let his desire to become president come before his first commitment to the people he was chosen to represent.
LACK OF CONCERN: Our congressmen act like they are so concerned, or so they say. The stock market loses 777 points in one day. Investors lose over a trillion dollars in one day, and congressmen go on a holiday.
DUI REVENUE: Rest assured fellow Cowetans you never have to worry about this county going broke. We make an exorbitant amount of money on each DUI. The arrest log is full of DUI cases. I just hope the money is spent wisely. Between cops, judges and lawyers, our own mob exists.
DRILL, REFINE: Releasing oil from the reserves won't fix our gas shortage. We would have to put the oil back into the reserves at some point. If we could drill more here in the U.S., build more refineries and build nuclear power plants, we wouldn't be such energy hostages.
GET OUT PUSH MOWER: If it gets so bad that there is not enough gas, my wife will just have to use the push mower to cut the lawn.
FOX SPIN: Fox News puts so much spin on a story, I swear it has the potential to throw off the Earth's axis.
SEMI IN ROUNDABOUT: I followed a semi east to the roundabout in Whitesburg. The driver had to make a left on Highway 5. What a scene. I laughed hard. Just wait Newnan. Yours is coming soon.
THANKS SONNY: Thank you Gov. Perdue for traveling to Spain and Portugal to promote our state. We have enough Spanish speaking people in Georgia to make any Spanish company feel at home. Your trip, at taxpayer expense, is perfect timing to do nothing about the gasoline crisis.
THE GRADUATES: The writer thinks Wall Street and Washington should have more graduates from Southeastern Conference schools. Don't you have to be functionally literate to get one of those jobs?
GOOD JOB, LYNN: Lynn Westmoreland is sure doing a good job lowering gas prices. I see gas for $0.00 all over the area.
SMOKEY ROAD BEST: I have seen the best ninth grade football team in the county, and it is the Smokey Road Middle School team.
BUY LAND FOR PARK: There is a development on Sprayberry Road in Newnan that looks as though it will not be built. Why doesn't the city buy that land for a park?
CHRISTIANS ANNOYING: It really annoys me when I see people I work with who are suppose to be big Christians stealing from the workplace. I should turn them in, but I won't. You can not hide it from God. You know who you are.
LAWYERS' OUTLANDISH LAWS: If our country was run by people who had run businesses instead of lawyers, we would be in much better shape. There would not be so many outlandish laws.
