Watch out for motorcycles

Let's take a break from the political babble and take notice of something happening in the community and across the nation. The number of motorcycles on the road have increased. If you haven't noticed the number of motorcycles (include scooters too) on the road, you should.

One can reasonably speculate a big reason for the increase is the price of fuel. I bought my motorcycle in July for that reason, but I can't deny I wanted one to ride for the thrill of it.

When I went to register for Motorcycle Safety Foundation course, there was a big demand for this course, and I found it might be the end of October before I could attend one of these classes. Fortunately, I found a local motorcycle dealer who is recognized by Georgia to hold these classes and was able to attend a class in early September. This says to me there are a lot of new inexperienced motorcyclists out there.

The handling characteristics of the motorcycle is much different than that of a car, and the ability to avoid situations with a car is a big deal until that experience is greater. One item that is pointed out in the class is that we (motorcyclists) are invisible. That's why the headlights on the motorcycle are always turned on. Some people will add extra light bars to increase the ability to be seen. There is a belief among some of the old timers that loud pipes makes you visible. Is there a purpose behind that irritation?

So please, general driving public, give the motorcyclist a break. Watch for them. Be patient and don't turn in front of one when it has the right of way. We all are just trying to get somewhere without injury.
