Give gift of blood this season http://www.times-herald.com/Health/Give-gift-of-blood-this-season-591281 Each time a blood donor gives the gift of life, he or she gets something back - the knowledge that in taking the time to donate one unit of blood, they may have saved up to three lives. Through Dec. 31, 2008 blood and platelet donors will get even more back when they are entered to win a $1000 gift card courtesy of The American Red Cross.

The "Give a Little, Buy a Lot!" campaign is aimed at increasing blood and platelet donations during a time of year when distractions due to school schedules and the holidays often lead to a dangerous dip in the available blood supply. Anyone who gives blood or platelets through the Red Cross during the promotion period will be automatically entered to win one of three gift cards.

Health officials encourage hand washing, keeping sick kids home http://www.times-herald.com/Health/Health-officials-encourage-hand-washing-keeping-sick-kids-home-591257 If you have noticed more children seem sick lately than this time last month you are correct. Every year as the weather turns cold and everyone heads indoors we begin to see more illnesses in the community, say public health officials. Congregated settings such as day cares, schools and churches provide a wonderful atmosphere of connectivity for children. However, they also provide common surfaces and close contact for spreading bacteria or viruses.

"In the past month we have seen an increase in the number physicians and school systems reporting fever, vomiting and diarrhea," said Hayla Hall, district 4 public information officer. "This is not uncommon and has not reached a level of great concern as there are many different viruses and bacteria that induce nausea and vomiting. Shigellosis and noroviruses are common causes for such symptoms."

Hospital celebrates anniversary of Rehab Services, Outpatient Department http://www.times-herald.com/Health/Hospital-celebrates-anniversary-of-Rehab-Services-Outpatient-Department-566548 Piedmont Newnan Hospital (PNH) celebrated the first anniversary of the Rehabilitation Services, Outpatient Department with a breakfast for medical staff and outpatient rehab patients Oct. 2. Speakers included PNH CEO Michael Bass, Chief Operating Officer Nathan Nipper, Director of Rehabilitation Cynthia Finney, Outpatient Rehabilitation Coordinator Karen Barber and recently discharged outpatient rehabilitation patient Sally Taylor.

Linda Sewell, RN, has dealt with slight inner ear problems and vertigo her entire life, but in mid-July she began having acute spells of dizziness to the point that she could no longer function normally. Sewell could only take a few steps without losing her balance and could not go to work. About four weeks ago, once she was through the worst of the dizziness, her doctor sent her to PNH's Rehabilitation Services, Outpatient Department for therapy.

Foley is Neurodynamic Solutions' only U.S. instructor http://www.times-herald.com/Health/Foley-is-Neurodynamic-Solutions--only-U-S--instructor--557400 More often than not, patients referred to physical therapists figure the exercises they'll undergo are designed to get their injured muscles back up to speed.

They're right, of course, but for the physical therapists at Georgia Rehabilitiation & Imaging of Warm Springs Medical Center physical therapy is much more multi-faceted than that. The multidimensional approach is thanks in large part to the guidance of Director Russ Foley, who has been surfing the waves of cutting-edge treatment for more than two decades.
