Newnan offense comes to life in fourth to hold back Indians

By Tommy Camp

The Times-Herald

It might have been the most entertaining Newnan-East Coweta game ever.

The Cougars rallied from five points down going to the fourth quarter in Drake Stadium Friday night to win the 18th meeting between the two schools, 43-26, and complete their second undefeated regular season in a row.

The Cougars, trailing for the first time this year after three periods, put together a season-high 28-point final period to come away with their seventh straight series win over the Indians (which EC still leads 10-8) and their 28th straight regular season victory to tie the county record set by East Coweta from 1999-01.

With the Cougars having clinched the Region 4-AAAAA championship (their fourth in a row) last week and East Coweta clinching third place, Friday's game had little meaning except for pride and bragging rights, but the two teams went after each other with their customary fire.

The final score surprised Newnan head coach Mike McDonald, however.

"I think both teams were expecting a low scoring game," he said. "But I told (East Coweta head coach Clint Wade) after the game that for two old defensive coaches to be in a game like this was really something."

But there was little defense Friday especially for two teams that pride themselves in stopping their opposition.

The two teams' premiere players did their thing Friday.

East Coweta's Tay Willis scored on a 59-yard run and an 80-yard pass play that was more like a 110-yard run after he took a short toss from Austin Ingram and ran all the way across the gridiron before turning upfield for his 80-yard gallop.

Newnan's Chris Robinson scored three times and quarterback Lendell Arnold threw two TD passes, one each to Alec and Zander Ogletree.

The Indians led in every quarter, but in the end couldn't forestall the Cougars' offense.

"We just ran out of gas in the fourth quarter," Wade said of his team that fell to 7-3 with the loss. "We didn't have anything left in our tank.

"But for our kids to go up against a team of Newnan's calliber and battle them all night like we did is a real tribute to them."

Willis' 59-yard run on the third play of the game, very similar to his 64-yard TD run on the third play last week against Riverdale, gave the Indians a quick early touchdown and a 7-0 lead after Mikey Zeidler's PAT.

Newnan came right back to tie it on a 58-yard touchdown pass from Arnold to Alec Ogletree who snatched the ball away from an Indian defender at the 25 and scored untouched.

Patrick McAlpin's extra point tied the game with 1:40 left in the first quarter.

Zeidler's 32-yard field goal early in the second quarter pushed EC back out front, 10-7, but Newnan came back on an 85-yard, three-play drive four minutes later to take a 14-10 lead into halftime after Robinson dashed in from 42 yards out.

The Cougars were ahead at halftime for the 10th straight time this year.

EC answered quickly in the third quarter, however, as Ingram and Willis combined on their 80-yard pass play. Newnan blocked the PAT, but EC led 16-14 with 10:27 to go in the third quarter.

It marked the first time the Cougars have lost a lead all year and the first time they have trailed in the second half all season.

Jarin Fowler's interception return to the Cougar 27 set up Zeidler's second field goal of the night and 10th of the season, a 26-yarder late in the third quarter and the Indians were up 19-14 going to the final 12 minutes.

But the Cougars would explode with their highest scoring quarter of the year, besting by one point their second period against Chapel Hill.

"Our kids never lost their poise," McDonald said. "They never quit battling.

"We're just so proud of what they've done this year. To lose 31 seniors off our great team from last year and to have to start over on offense, I never imagined we'd be 10-0 at this point."

Robinson's 32-yard TD run and Ingram's two-point conversion carry put Newnan back on top, this time to stay, at 22-19 in the first 13 seconds of the fourth quarter.

After Jamal Ransby's interception near midfield Arnold and Zander Ogletree combined for an 18-yard scoring pass to make it 29-19 Newnan and provide the Cougars with what seemed like plenty of breathing room with 8:47 left.

But EC wasn't through.

Quarterback Zach Hutcheson threw a 79-yard bomb to K.J. Hill moments later to the Newnan two and Angel Santiago scored on the next play and the Indians had climbed to within 29-26 with 7:09 still to play.

But the Cougars iced it away on their next possession, going 64 yards in 12 plays, running almost four and a half minutes off the clock and converting two fourth downs along the way before Robinson scampered in from 14 yards out.

Bryant Ball added a final score with 2:05 left with a nine-yard scoring run.

You can call me immature, but my comments directed towards you were in reference to the trash talk that you made prior to the game. I was no more immature than you. In fact, you were the one that quoted: "Alec Ogletree is a 5 star prospect, Tay Willis is not". Who didn't know about Alec? Willis is just flying below the radar. He's a 5 star caliber to me, and I'm not just being a supporter, I'm being real.

We can agree to disagree but Newnan drove the ball all game long. Even though I graduated from Newnan 30 years ago ,I supported East Coweta for many years. Even helped paint the stadium prior to this season(my wife's a booster club member).DJ seems to be somewhat immature and he can take that any way he wants to . Go Cougars and Indians . We are behind you. And DJ, don't buy into that South Ga talk . If you do ,you lose half the battle.

at the very least the pranks pulled are Criminal Trespass...there is usually damage because if it costs money to repair or fix something has been damaged...there is intent of a crime for even being on the property without permission to whomever does the act....just something to think about the next time a little ole fun prank that doesnt hurt anyone pops in your head.

I know that hospitality is great in Coweta County, but Valdosta and other SoGa Teams are arrogant about the size of their stadiums, and success. Beat up on them and have no mercy. If they are down, kick them. I know it sounds mean, but they will do the same given the opportunity.

You should very proud of your son. He did an outstanding job against our defense and that takes a lot of talent. I do not understand why there are no colleges after him, that makes no sense. Even as a Cougar fan I hated to see him have to come out. It was a very exciting game and both teams played. I am sure Tay will be just fine against Lowndes. I hope EC upsets them. To you EC fan, unless you have proof keep your mouth shut. You guys trashed your own place a few years ago and tried to blame it on Newnan and whose to say the same thing didn't happen again. A prank between rival schools has been going on for years and as long as property is not damaged it is all in fun even if Newnan people did it. Get over it and cheer on your team for next week.

Just a word to the wise...matter of fact just call it an opinion, but yardage doesnt tell the whole truth...I believe Newnan's turnover issues kept the game close..oh and missed tackles but who can blame them #1 was pretty good against the awesome defense....and they were pretty good in person if I dont say so myself...no need to call names...and yeah Valdosta might be the best 7-3 team in the state so take care of those turnover issues this week and good luck!

The game was wonderful and fun to watch. But some of the fan behavior was bad. I saw several teens acting totally rude and that was on Newnan's side. It was so crowded behind the stands you could hardly get to the bathroom. If you don't feel safe then its no longer fun. And I had a policeman standing near our section so I felt pretty safe.

Next time you post please get your facts right. Several East Coweta fans said there were no eggs being thrown at anyone at the game so please stop making things up just to make yourself feel better. It is pretty sad that a great game liek the one saw Friday is being overshadowed in this vent by a bunch of whining from fans about tings that had nothing to do with the game. I was pretty sure that Tay would have a pretty good game but not as good as he showed. He is an excellent player with alot of potential for the next level. That doesn't undermine Newnan's D because they still played a great game as did the offense. Good luck EC next week. Stay focused and their is no reason why you can't pull of an upset. We will be rooting for you guys until we meet again of course. You have a great team and great fans.

In the end it will be a help to Newnan as they had to persevere and overcome adversity to win. Our journey to the Dome begins.

Disappointed are you serious. Two unsportmanlike penalties constitutes no class for you. One of them was a facemask which is always a 15 yard penalty, the other was pretty questionable as both players were going hard after one another which in my opinion is football. When the whistle blew it was over. Can't help that the refs were flag happy. I do believe there were a couple of unsportsmanlike penalties on EC as well. It was a great game and I thought both teams did a great job but apparently you are just a sore loser and need something to complain about. Please know what you are talking about before writing.

First, congrats Newnan. But I'd be curious to know WHY EC didn't go for it when they had 4th and inches at the Newnan 7 and instead opted for a FG to go up 19-14? In a game in which both teams "could throw the records out the window" and "were playing for pride" since their playoff seeding were already determined, it looked like EC was playing more "not to lose" instead of "playing to win." I know- people are gonna say Willis was out of the game because of injury at that point. But it's a football team- not a 1 man show. Have enough confidence in those other guys to step up and make a play! Not saying it would've made a difference in the outcome, but there's a big difference between 19-14 and 23-14 at that point in the game!

Good job team. Coaches, Offense, Defense, Special Teams, Fans. A big shoutout to the unsung O-Line you have done a excellent job this year opening holes for the backfield...onward to the playoffs.

Well it did not take long for someone to say that Willis going out was the reason for the loss...I must have missed the 28 points Newnan put up in the fourth.

Class

Newnan has not class??? How bout your fans ripping up all the signs they brought on our track. Newnan didnt do that your school did. Also, your student section brought the toilet paper, they were throwing around like a beach ball during the game. Dont say someone doesnt have class, when your own school doesnt have any. Focus on the game and the boys, that is what matters.

Controlled Efforts

The referees had way too much control of this game. Some of the calls against Newnan were very questionable. However, I did appreciate the efforts of both teams. Tay Willis is the real deal and K.J. Hill had a good game for the Indians against his former school.

Last night was definately one of te best Newnan/EC games as far as intensity and excitement goes. The only other game I can think of that tos it was the overtime game a few years ago. My hats off to both teams because both played a great game up to the last few minutes of the game. I am a proud Newnan Cougar fan today, not just because of this win but because a whole new team took over on offense this year and they really made the best out the opportunity given to them. It is a real tribute to the coaches, players, and their parents who push them to be the best. Congratulations Cats, enjoy today but get ready for next week. Co Cougars.

Both times did an outstanding job last nite. It was a classic game that I will remember for a long time. I believe if Tay Willis hadn't left the game then maybe the Indians would have won. Great job guys.

Sportsmanship

It was a well fought game on both sides but I was really disappointed in the lack of sportsmanship and class by Newnan. First with students trashing our side of the field with toilet paper and then trying to parade around our side of the field after scoring a touchdown. Even the guys on the field played dirty as evidenced by all the personal foul penalties. Come on Newnan! Don't be a bunch of thugs.
